What this chart shows. The 1,383 US tornadoes of 2025 grouped by their rating on the Enhanced Fujita scale. EF1 was the most common with 552, then EF0 with 416 and EF2 with 141. There were 34 EF3, 5 EF4 and one EF5 tornado, and 234 tornadoes were left unrated.
How the data is collected. Each tornado is counted once, with the highest rating along its whole track, so a tornado that crossed a state line as an EF3 in one state and an EF1 in the other appears here as EF3. The Storm Prediction Center's database marks tornadoes it could not rate as unrated, and they make up 16.9 per cent of the year's total.
Background. The Enhanced Fujita scale rates tornadoes from damage, with estimated winds of 65 to 85 mph for EF0 and more than 200 mph for EF5. The year's only EF5 struck near Enderlin, North Dakota, on June 20, and Wikipedia's page for the year counts the same single EF5 and the same five EF4s. For EF2 the two sources agree exactly at 141.
Limits. Ratings come from damage, so a violent tornado over open country can receive a low rating or none at all. Wikipedia's running count for the year is higher, at 1,430, mostly because it lists more unrated tornadoes, 271 against 234 here.

Weak tornadoes dominate: EF0 and EF1 together made up 70.0 per cent of the total. Only 40 tornadoes, 34 EF3, 5 EF4 and 1 EF5, reached the strong categories of EF3 and above.
