Tornadoes by Month 2025

What this chart shows. The number of tornadoes in the United States in each month of 2025, from the Storm Prediction Center's final data. April had the most with 313, followed by May with 278, June with 247 and March with 241. November had the fewest with 12, and January 15. The four months from March to June held 1,079 of the year's 1,383 tornadoes, or 78.0 per cent.

How the data is collected. Each tornado is counted once, in the month it touched down, including tornadoes that crossed from one state into another. The busiest single day of the year was April 2, with 88 tornadoes, and the outbreak of March 14 and 15 produced 104 across the two days.

Background. The Storm Prediction Center describes tornado season as the peak period for historical tornado reports in an area, and notes a general northward shift from late winter through mid-summer. The peak in the southern Plains is May into early June, it comes earlier on the Gulf Coast, and in the northern Plains and upper Midwest it is June or July. Tornadoes can happen at any time of year if the conditions are right.

Limits. A national monthly total mixes regions whose seasons peak at different times, so it does not show when any one state is most at risk. Totals for a single year also depend heavily on a few large outbreaks.
