Tornadoes by State 2025

What this chart shows. The number of tornadoes recorded in each US state in 2025, in the final data of NOAA's Storm Prediction Center. Illinois and Texas tied for the most with 126 each, followed by Oklahoma with 106, Missouri with 99 and North Dakota with 82. Tornadoes touched down in 39 states; New Jersey recorded one. Twelve places had none, among them Alaska, Hawaii, Nevada, Washington, West Virginia and the District of Columbia.

How the data is collected. The Storm Prediction Center keeps one record per tornado, and when a tornado crosses a state line it adds a separate segment for each state. This chart counts those state segments, so a tornado that crossed from Arkansas into Missouri counts once in each. In 2025, 31 of these extra state counts came from tornadoes that crossed a border, which is why the state totals add up to 1,414 while the national count is 1,383.

Background. The Storm Prediction Center describes the recorded count as incomplete: tornado reports increased around the installation of the NEXRAD Doppler radar network in the mid-1990s, almost entirely through weak tornadoes that are now detected and reported far more often. It puts the recent national figure at around 1,200 a year, give or take a few hundred.

Limits. A large state has more room for tornadoes, so raw counts favour big states such as Texas. One year is also a small sample: Kansas, which has averaged 80.9 tornadoes a year since 1996, recorded only 29 in 2025.
