States With the Most Murders 2025

What this chart shows. The estimated number of murders and nonnegligent manslaughters in every US state and the District of Columbia in 2025. Texas had the most with 1,465, followed by California with 1,370, Florida with 748, North Carolina with 723 and Georgia with 629. Vermont had the fewest with 10, then North Dakota with 12 and Wyoming with 16. The national total was 14,085.

How the data is collected. The counts are the FBI's estimated totals from its Crime Data Explorer, which include estimates for police agencies that did not send data. The FBI notes that limited 2025 data were available for Florida and North Dakota, and in Florida the agencies that did report covered 81.6 per cent of residents, so a larger part of its figure is estimated.

Background. The United States recorded 17,206 murders in 2024 in the same file, so the 2025 total was 3,121 lower, a fall of 18.1 per cent. The number fell in 45 of the 51 places.

Limits. These are counts, not rates, so they mostly follow population: Texas and California are the two most populous states. Measured per 100,000 residents, Texas's rate was 4.6 and California's 3.5, both below several smaller states.
