Property Crime Rate by State 2025

What this chart shows. The property crime rate in every US state and the District of Columbia in 2025, as offenses per 100,000 residents in the FBI's estimates. The District of Columbia had the highest rate at 3,132.3, followed by New Mexico at 2,239.5, Colorado at 2,143.6 and Oregon at 2,118.0. Idaho had the lowest at 605.0, with New Hampshire at 818.1 and Rhode Island at 910.5. The national rate was 1,534.8, compared with 1,761.1 in 2024.

How the data is collected. The FBI publishes estimated totals for burglary, larceny-theft and motor vehicle theft, and in its file the three add up exactly to the property crime total for every state. Larceny-theft is by far the largest part, 74.5 per cent of the national total in 2025. The rate is each state's total divided by its population.

Background. The FBI's Uniform Crime Reporting Program counts burglary, larceny-theft, motor vehicle theft and arson as property crime. The object of the theft-type offenses is the taking of money or property, and there is no force or threat of force against the victims. Arson is not part of the FBI's estimated totals, so it is not included here.

Limits. The figures count offenses known to police, so thefts that were never reported are missing from every state's total. Alaska was the only state where the rate rose, from 1,721.2 in 2024 to 1,892.8.
