Violent Crime Rate by State 2025

What this chart shows. The violent crime rate in every US state and the District of Columbia in 2025, measured as offenses per 100,000 residents in the FBI's official estimates. The District of Columbia had the highest rate at 803.0, followed by Alaska at 729.3 and New Mexico at 621.6. Maine had the lowest at 93.2, with Connecticut at 109.6 and New Hampshire at 117.6. The national rate was 327.6, down from 362.9 in 2024.

How the data is collected. The figures come from the FBI's estimated crime totals, published on its Crime Data Explorer as a file covering every state from 1979 to 2025; the rate is each state's total divided by its population. The FBI estimates offenses for police agencies that did not report, which matters most where reporting was thin: in 2025, agencies covering 77.3 per cent of Louisiana's residents and 81.6 per cent of Florida's sent data. As a cross-check, the FBI's reported figures for the 36 states and DC where agencies covered at least 95 per cent of residents came within 5 per cent of these estimates.

Background. In the FBI's Uniform Crime Reporting Program, violent crime is made up of four offenses: murder and nonnegligent manslaughter, rape, robbery and aggravated assault. The FBI defines them as the offenses that involve force or threat of force. In the 2025 file the four parts add up exactly to each state's violent crime total.

Limits. The FBI revises earlier years each time it publishes a new one, so the 2024 figures in this file are not the ones first released: Alabama's 2024 rate is 372.9 here, against 359.9 in the figures first published, as Wikipedia still lists them. A rate counts where an offense was reported, and a place with many visitors and commuters, such as the District of Columbia, is still measured against its residents only. The rate rose in Alaska, Utah and New Hampshire, and Mississippi was level at 226.9.
