How Many CPU Cores PC Gamers Have
Valve's monthly hardware survey records how many processor cores each Steam machine reports. This chart shows the distribution of CPU core counts in the August 2026 survey, as a share of surveyed users.
Analysis
8 cpus is the most common configuration at 28.04% of surveyed machines, ahead of 6 cpus on 27.43%. 56.9% of users now report eight cores or more. Game engines have historically struggled to use many cores well, which makes the spread here worth watching: the top two counts alone cover 55.5% of players, so most PC games are still being written for machines in a narrow band of core counts rather than for the extremes.
