Countries ranked by total annual electricity consumption in 2024, in terawatt-hours (TWh), based on International Energy Agency data. China is by far the largest consumer at 9,300 TWh — more than twice the United States on 4,200 TWh and more than five times India on 1,780 TWh.
The other five countries in the table use between 530 and 1,030 TWh each: Russia, Japan, South Korea, Canada and Germany.
These are national totals, so they reflect the size of each country's population and economy as much as how intensively electricity is used. A ranking per person would order the list very differently.
