Countries ranked by armed forces personnel (thousand) in 2020, using World Bank figures for the 170 countries that reported that year. India leads on 3,068, ahead of China (2,535) and North Korea (1,469). Active-duty military and paramilitary personnel, where paramilitary forces are trained and equipped for military operations. Reserves are not counted, which lowers countries that rely on a large reserve.
