About This Dataset
Countries by Military Expenditure 2025
Military spending in 2025 in current US dollars, as estimated by the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute. Converting at market exchange rates understates countries where soldiers and equipment cost less, so the dollar ranking and the ranking by real military capability are not the same list.
Analysis
The United States spent $954 billion in 2025, 33% of world military spending and 2.84 times the $336 billion of China. The 15 countries here account for 80.3% of the world total. Spending as a share of GDP tells a different story: the United States spent 3.1% of GDP while Ukraine spent 40%. The smallest budget on this chart is $40.2 billion, by Spain.
