Solar Share of Electricity by Country 2020
Share of each country's total electricity generation that came from solar power in 2020, measured by Ember from reported national grid data. Covers countries that generated at least 10 TWh of electricity in the year, so very small island grids do not dominate the ranking.
Analysis
In 2020 no country in the world took more than 12.2% of its electricity from solar, and that leader was Jordan. Honduras at 10.9% was second - the only year in this series where a Central American country ranks that high. The whole top fifteen fits between 12.2% and 4.4%, a spread of under eight points, compared with a 2024 leader above 24%. Vietnam sits last here at 4.4%, one year into a boom that would take it above 10% within twelve months. Chile, Italy and Australia are separated by two hundredths of a point at 9.0%, with Greece just above them.
