Solar Share of Electricity by Country 2021
Share of each country's total electricity generation that came from solar power in 2021, measured by Ember from reported national grid data. Covers countries that generated at least 10 TWh of electricity in the year, so very small island grids do not dominate the ranking.
Analysis
Jordan topped the world in 2021 with 15.4% of its electricity from solar, more than three points ahead of Chile at 12.0%. Jordan is the country most people would not guess: a small grid, no fossil reserves of its own, and a deliberate build-out of desert solar. Vietnam appears at 10.3% after starting the period with almost none, and Hungary at 10.5% is only halfway to the 24.2% it would reach three years later. Germany, the country most associated with solar in Europe, sits eleventh at 8.5%.
