Solar Share of Electricity by Country 2023
Share of each country's total electricity generation that came from solar power in 2023, measured by Ember from reported national grid data. Covers countries that generated at least 10 TWh of electricity in the year, so very small island grids do not dominate the ranking.
Analysis
Chile led the world in 2023 at 20.1% of its electricity from solar, ahead of Hungary at 19.5% and Greece at 18.2%. Set against the 2024 edition of this chart, the table shows how quickly solar rankings reorder: Hungary was second here before overtaking Chile a year later. Spain reached 17.4% and Australia 16.5%, the two largest grids in this ranking at roughly 280 TWh each, while the Netherlands managed 16.4% on a system of about 120 TWh.
