Solar Share of Electricity by Country 2024
Share of each country's total electricity generation that came from solar power in 2024, measured by Ember from reported national grid data. Covers countries that generated at least 10 TWh of electricity in the year, so very small island grids do not dominate the ranking.
Analysis
Hungary leads the world at 24.2% of its electricity from solar in 2024, ahead of Chile at 22.8% and Spain at 20.8%. The ranking mixes small European grids with two of the largest solar markets on earth: Germany reaches 14.9% and Italy 13.4%, both on systems above 250 TWh. Two entries stand out for opposite reasons. Pakistan at 12.6% built its share through a surge of imported panels rather than utility projects, while DR Congo's 15.8% sits on a grid of only 16 TWh. Australia is the sole country above 17% with generation over 280 TWh.
