Coffee Production by Country
Vietnam is the defining story in modern coffee. It produced almost nothing in 1990 and is now the world's second-largest grower, having increased output more than twentyfold after the government pushed hard into robusta in the Central Highlands. That surge helped trigger the coffee price crisis around the turn of the millennium, when prices fell below the cost of production and smallholders across Central America and East Africa abandoned their farms. Colombia, third, produces almost exactly what it did in 1990. Figures are green coffee.
Analysis
Brazil heads the table on 3,388, ahead of Vietnam (2,015) and Colombia (840) in Green Coffee Production (Thousand Tonnes) in 2024. Brazil and Vietnam together hold 53.1% of the combined total of all 14 entities. Only 2 of the 14 reach even half the leader's figure (1,694 or more). It takes the next three entities (Vietnam, Colombia, Indonesia) added together to match Brazil. How the figures are calculated
- Values are shown as reported by the source. Nothing is rescaled, rebased or converted — the only changes are thousand separators and decimals shown to two places.
- Missing years are left empty rather than estimated — no interpolation, no carrying a previous year forward.
- Change is measured between the first and last year in which an entity actually reported a value, so a series that starts late is not penalised for the years before it existed.
- The compound annual rate is (last ÷ first)^(1 ÷ years) − 1, using those same two reported years.
