About This Dataset
Countries Hosting the Most Refugees 2024Iran hosts more refugees than any other country - almost 3.5 million, mainly Afghans - followed closely by Turkey with 2.94 million, largely Syrians. Germany is the only wealthy Western nation near the top at 2.75 million, reflecting its acceptance of Syrian and Ukrainian arrivals. After the top three, the burden falls heavily on developing economies: Uganda (1.76M), Pakistan (1.56M), Chad (1.28M), Ethiopia (1.01M) and Bangladesh (1.01M) each host over a million despite limited resources. Sudan (793K) and the Democratic Republic of Congo (517K) round out the list, both grappling with their own internal conflicts. The data underscores UNHCR's finding that the countries least able to afford it shoulder most of the world's displacement.
