About This Dataset
Longest-Serving Current National LeadersAfrica dominates the ranking of the world's most entrenched leaders. Cameroon's Paul Biya has led his country for about 50 years, making him the longest-serving, followed closely by Equatorial Guinea's Teodoro Obiang at 46 years - the two have between them ruled for nearly a century. Uganda's Yoweri Museveni (40 years) is third. The rest of the list blends African and post-Soviet strongmen: Eritrea's Isaias Afwerki (34), Tajikistan's Emomali Rahmon (33), Belarus's Alexander Lukashenko (31), Congo's Denis Sassou Nguesso (28), Djibouti's Ismail Omar Guelleh (27) and Rwanda's Paul Kagame (26). Turkey's Recep Tayyip Erdogan (23) is the only leader from a large economy on the list. The pattern highlights how long-term rule concentrates in states with weak term limits.
