A Premier League season is 38 matches, so Barry's 653 appearances represent about 17 full seasons of playing in every single game — and no player manages that, which means his career actually spans considerably more seasons than that with injuries, rotation and substitute appearances factored in. The eight players in this table all passed 500 appearances, a threshold reached by only a handful of players in the competition's history.

The top three are separated by 21 appearances, roughly half a season, which is unusually tight for a career-total record. Two of them, Barry and Milner, played much of their careers as midfielders known for durability rather than for goals, and the list as a whole rewards a specific profile: outfield players who avoided serious injury, and goalkeepers, who play more consecutive matches than any other position. David James on 572 is the goalkeeper here.

One thing to keep in mind is that this record is still moving. James Milner kept playing in the competition long after Gareth Barry, the only player above him, had left it, and appearance records are the one category where an active player can climb the list simply by continuing to be selected.

The count covers Premier League matches only — not FA Cup, League Cup or European fixtures, and not games played in the old First Division before 1992, which is why some careers that began in the 1980s appear shorter here than they were.
