Countries ranked by total wheat production in 2025, measured in million tonnes according to FAO FAOSTAT crop production data and USDA World Agricultural Supply and Demand Estimates. China is the world's largest wheat producer by volume — growing approximately 140 million tonnes annually across the North China Plain, Yangtze River basin, and northwest provinces, feeding a population that consumes wheat as a dietary staple in the form of noodles, steamed buns, and dumplings rather than bread. Despite this enormous production, China also imports significant quantities of premium wheat for industrial milling, reflecting the gap between its domestic varieties and the high-protein hard wheat specifications demanded by certain food manufacturing sectors.
