About This Dataset
Satellites Launched by Operator 2025The 18 organisations that had the most satellites placed in orbit during 2025, counted by the owner or operator recorded for each satellite. Four organisations tie on 10, so all of them are shown. SpaceX appears under the owner code the catalog uses for its satellites, and every one of the 3,169 satellites under that code is named Starlink.
How the data is collected
The counts come from the orbital launch log in Jonathan McDowell's General Catalog of Artificial Space Objects, updated on 13 September 2026. Only payloads from launches that reached orbit are included. Entries flagged PX, which the catalog defines as not in its standard list of satellites, are left out, and so are the Starship vehicles and the "Starlink Simulator" payloads flown on Starship test flights. That rule gives 4,522 satellites for the year, the same total as McDowell's table of Starlink and other satellites launched per year.
Background
In the catalog, the Owner field holds the code of the owner or operator of each object, and a separate State field holds the country associated with that owner. McDowell's launch list aims to include every successful orbital launch and every confirmed failed attempt, and he believes no more than a handful of failures are missing. The year 2025 holds his record for the most orbital launch attempts, at 329.
Limits
One satellite can have more than one owner. 159 of the 2025 satellites list joint owners, and this chart credits each of them to the first owner named. The catalog's own organisation names are used, so a Chinese company may appear under its English corporate name rather than the constellation name used in the press. The December Atlas V mission for Kuiper Systems is recorded in the launch list as Amazon Leo LA-04, but its satellites remain under the Kuiper Systems owner code.
SpaceX's Starlink satellites total 3,169, which is 70.1% of the 4,522 satellites that reached orbit in 2025. Kuiper Systems is second with 180, less than a seventeenth of the SpaceX figure. China Satellite Network Group follows with 134 and is the largest Chinese operator on the list. The US National Reconnaissance Office placed 93 satellites, more than Planet Labs with 77. Eight of the 18 organisations shown are Chinese, and the Italian Space Agency is the only European government agency among them, with 22. The catalog records 322 different first-named owners for the year, so the other 304 shared the remaining 593 satellites.
