Natural Graphite Mine Production by Country 2025

About This Dataset
Natural Graphite Mine Production by Country 2025How the data is collected: the USGS compiles output from company and government reports. In this edition it revised 2024 production for Austria, Brazil, Canada, India, South Korea, Mexico, Mozambique, Norway, Tanzania, Ukraine and Vietnam.
Background: natural graphite is used in batteries, where it goes into the anode (the USGS tracks U.S. imports of graphite battery anode material separately), and in brake linings, lubricants, powdered metals, refractories and steelmaking. The USGS reports that most of China's output is crystalline flake graphite. In the first nine months of 2025 China exported 37,400 tons of spherical purified graphite, 29% more than a year earlier; South Korea, Indonesia, Japan and the United States were the leading recipients. In 2025 the U.S. Department of Commerce set preliminary anti-dumping duties of 93.5% on Chinese graphite anode material. The United States itself mined no natural graphite; flake graphite was last produced there in 1979.
Limits: the 2025 values are estimates, and the sum of the countries shown is about 2.6% below the rounded world total of 1.8 million tons.
China mined 1,400,000 tons of natural graphite in 2025, 77.8% of the 1,800,000-ton world total and more than 17 times the second producer, Madagascar (80,000 tons). The fastest growth came from Tanzania, which rose from 27,000 to 75,000 tons (+178%), moving from fifth place to third. Mozambique grew 54% to 60,000 tons as a new mine opened in Niassa and the Balama mine restarted in June. Brazil rose to 65,000 tons as two mines that opened in 2024 ramped up. Excluding China, the listed countries produced 352,880 tons, about a quarter of China's output.
