Nickel Mine Production by Country 2025

About This Dataset
Nickel Mine Production by Country 2025How the data is collected: the USGS compiles output from company and government reports; in this edition it revised Canada's 2024 production significantly based on a government report. New Caledonia, an overseas territory of France, is listed separately, as it is in the USGS table.
Background: the USGS estimates world nickel mine production rose 5% to 3.9 million tons in 2025. It attributes Indonesia's increase to new operations ramping up, Canada's to a completed mine expansion, and New Caledonia's to steadier operating conditions after interruptions in 2024. Australia's output fell after several companies put mines on care-and-maintenance because of low prices, and the Philippines' fell after multiple mines cut production. According to the International Nickel Study Group, the market has been in surplus since 2022; the average London Metal Exchange cash price in 2025 was an estimated 11% lower than in 2024. In the United States, stainless and alloy steels and nickel-containing alloys typically account for more than 85% of nickel consumption.
Limits: other countries not listed individually produced a further 290,000 tons. The 2025 values are estimates.
Indonesia mined 2,600,000 tons of nickel in 2025, 66.7% of the 3,900,000-ton world total. That is nearly ten times the second producer, the Philippines (270,000 tons). Indonesia alone added 290,000 tons in a year, more than the total 2025 output of every other country on the list. The biggest decline was Australia, down 54% from 98,000 to 45,000 tons, which dropped it from seventh place to eighth. The Philippines fell 24%, while Canada and New Caledonia both rose to 140,000 tons.
