Tallest Lighthouses in the World
About This Dataset
Tallest Lighthouses in the World
A lighthouse has to be tall enough for its light to clear the horizon, which is why the tallest ones stand on flat coasts rather than cliffs. This chart ranks the world's tallest traditional lighthouses by structure height in metres.
Analysis
Île Vierge Lighthouse is the tallest at 83 metres, 7 metres above Lighthouse of Genoa on 76. 3 of these 12 lighthouses are in France. The range is narrow by the standards of tall structures - from 67 to 83 metres - because height is set by the geometry of the horizon rather than by ambition: past a certain point, a taller tower adds very little visible range. The median build year among those shown is 1910.
