Countries That Protect the Most Land 2024
The 20 countries and territories that protect the largest share of their land area in 2024. Seychelles leads with 68.1% of its land under protection, ahead of New Caledonia at 59.6% and Venezuela at 56.8%. Protected areas include national parks, nature reserves and other designated conservation land. Data covers 209 countries and territories.
Analysis
The median country protects 17% of its land. 36 of the 209 measured are at or above 30%, which is the target governments set for 2030 under the global biodiversity framework.
