The 20 countries with the highest crude death rate in 2024, in deaths per 1,000 people. Monaco is highest at 20.14, followed by Bulgaria at 15.6 and Serbia at 14.9. Crude death rate counts all deaths against total population, so it reflects the age of a population as much as its health. Data covers 217 countries and territories.
Analysis
The median country records 7.18 deaths per 1,000 people. This ranking mixes two very different causes: countries with old populations, where deaths are high because most people are elderly, and countries with weak health systems and short life expectancy. The lowest of the 217 measured is United Arab Emirates at 0.97.
