Electricity Demand Per Person by Country 2024

About This Dataset

Electricity Demand Per Person by Country 2024
Electricity demand per person in 2024, in megawatt-hours, as measured by Ember. One MWh is 1,000 kilowatt-hours. Covers countries that generated at least 10 TWh of electricity in the year, so very small island grids do not dominate the ranking.
✨ AI Insight

Iceland uses the most electricity per person in the world at 48.4 MWh a year, ahead of Norway at 24.9 and Bahrain at 23.9. The ranking is a mix of cold northern countries, Gulf states with year-round air conditioning, and economies built around heavy industry or aluminium smelting. The United States at 12.8 MWh is the largest economy in the ranking, yet uses roughly a quarter as much per person as Iceland, whose figure is driven by aluminium smelting on a population of under 400,000.
