Fossil Fuel Share of Electricity by Country 2023

About This Dataset

Fossil Fuel Share of Electricity by Country 2023
Share of electricity generated from all fossil fuels combined - coal, gas and oil - in 2023, as measured by Ember. Covers countries that generated at least 10 TWh of electricity in the year, so very small island grids do not dominate the ranking.
✨ AI Insight

Every country in this top fifteen generated more than 95% of its electricity from fossil fuels in 2023, led by Libya at 100.0%. The list is dominated by Gulf and North African oil and gas producers, joined by Hong Kong and Singapore - two dense city grids with almost no land for renewables - and by Bangladesh, much the most populous country here. What the ranking does not contain is as telling as what it does: not one of the fifteen is a large industrial economy, because every one of those has at least some nuclear, hydro or wind in the mix.
