Fossil Fuel Share of Electricity by Country 2024
Share of electricity generated from all fossil fuels combined - coal, gas and oil - in 2024, as measured by Ember. Covers countries that generated at least 10 TWh of electricity in the year, so very small island grids do not dominate the ranking.
Analysis
Libya and Turkmenistan both generate essentially 100% of their electricity from fossil fuels, and every country in this top fifteen is above 95%. The list is dominated by oil and gas producers in the Middle East and North Africa, joined by Hong Kong at 99.0% and Singapore at 95.1%, two dense city grids with no room for large renewable build-out. Bangladesh at 98.1% is the most populous country here by a wide margin. Cuba at 96.0% is the only Latin American entry.
