Hydropower Share of Electricity by Country 2023
Share of each country's electricity generated by hydropower in 2023, measured by Ember from reported national grid data. Covers countries that generated at least 10 TWh of electricity in the year, so very small island grids do not dominate the ranking.
Analysis
Bhutan, Nepal and Paraguay all sat above 98% hydropower in 2023, with Bhutan highest at 100.0%. Norway at 89.0% is the only wealthy industrial economy in the group. What separates 2023 from 2024 is rainfall rather than construction: several of these countries moved by a point or more between the two years with no meaningful change in installed capacity, which is the defining weakness of a hydro-dominated grid.
