Hydropower Share of Electricity by Country 2024
About This Dataset
Hydropower Share of Electricity by Country 2024
Share of each country's total electricity generation that came from hydropower in 2024, measured by Ember from reported national grid data. Covers countries that generated at least 10 TWh of electricity in the year, so very small island grids do not dominate the ranking.
✨ AI Insight
Bhutan runs on 100.0% hydropower, with Paraguay at 99.4% and Nepal at 98.8% close behind. Hydro is the one clean source that can carry an entire national grid on its own, which is why this list overlaps almost completely with the cleanest-grid ranking. Geography decides membership: mountains and large rivers, not wealth. Norway at 88.8% is the only high-income country in the top ten, while the largest system here is Venezuela at 91.1%. Six of the fifteen are in Africa or Central Asia.
