Coal Power Capacity by Country 2024

About This Dataset

Coal Power Capacity by Country 2024
Installed coal-fired electricity generating capacity by country at the end of 2024, in gigawatts, as reported by Ember.
✨ AI Insight

China operates 1173.4 GW of coal capacity - more than every other country in the world put together (976 GW) and nearly five times second-placed India at 241.5 GW. The United States is third at 192.7 GW. What this ranking does not show is utilisation, and the difference is large: against 2024 generation, Indian coal plants ran at about 72% of their capacity and Chinese ones at 57%, while American and German plants managed only 39% and 38%. The gap in actual coal burned is therefore wider than the gap in capacity. Germany at 32.3 GW and Poland at 27.9 GW are the only EU members listed.
