Total electricity generated from solar power by country in 2023, in terawatt-hours, as measured by Ember from reported national grid data.
Analysis
China produced 584 TWh of solar electricity in 2023, about 2.4 times the United States at 239 TWh and more than the next four countries combined. India was third at 115 TWh. Japan at 96 TWh is the striking entry: it generated more solar power than Germany, Spain or Australia despite far less land and sunshine, a legacy of its post-2012 feed-in tariff. Comparing this table with the 2024 edition shows the pace of change - China added over 250 TWh in a single year, more than Japan's entire annual output.
