Largest Net Electricity Importers by Country 2024
About This Dataset
Largest Net Electricity Importers by Country 2024
Countries that imported the most electricity on a net basis in 2024, in terawatt-hours. Net imports are electricity brought in from neighbouring grids minus electricity sent out.
✨ AI Insight
Italy imported a net 51.0 TWh of electricity in 2024, well ahead of the United Kingdom at 33.2 TWh and Thailand at 32.4 TWh. Europe supplies most of the list, which reflects the density of cross-border interconnection there rather than a shortage of generation. Germany at 26.3 TWh is notable because it remains one of the largest generators in the world while still buying power in. The United States imports 13.8 TWh, a rounding error against its own 4,391 TWh of generation.
