About This Dataset

Share of each country's electricity that was generated from natural gas in 2024, measured by Ember from reported national grid data. Covers countries that generated at least 10 TWh of electricity in the year, so very small island grids do not dominate the ranking.

Analysis

Turkmenistan generates 100.0% of its electricity from natural gas - effectively its entire grid - followed by Bahrain at 99.7% and Algeria at 98.6%. Almost every country here sits on its own gas reserves, which is the pattern that separates this list from the coal ranking: coal dependence often reflects imports and cost, gas dependence usually reflects domestic supply. Singapore at 92.2% is the clear exception, importing nearly all of it. Iran at 85.9% and Egypt at 81.3% run the largest grids on the list.
