Clean Electricity Share by Country 2024
Share of electricity generated from clean sources - all renewables plus nuclear - in 2024, as measured by Ember. Covers countries that generated at least 10 TWh of electricity in the year, so very small island grids do not dominate the ranking.
Analysis
Six countries ran on effectively 100% clean electricity in 2024: Bhutan, DR Congo, Ethiopia, Iceland, Nepal and Paraguay, every one of them dominated by hydropower. Costa Rica and Uruguay follow at 99.9% and 98.9%. The largest grid anywhere near the top is France at 94.9%, and it gets there through nuclear rather than hydro, on 562 TWh of generation - more than three times the output of Sweden or Norway. Every country above 94% here leans on one dominant clean source rather than a balanced mix, which is why the list is so geographically uneven.
