Air Passengers Carried by Country 2023The United States lead with 941.6 million passengers, over 320 million more than China on 619.2 million, and together the two carry more than every other country on this list combined. The most surprising entry is Ireland in third with 192.5 million, a country of just five million people. This is an artefact of how the data is compiled: passengers are attributed to the airline's country of registration, and Ryanair, Europe's largest carrier by passenger numbers, is registered in Ireland. It illustrates why this measure reflects where airlines are incorporated rather than where people fly. Turkey's 125.9 million and Indonesia's 97 million show how quickly aviation has grown outside the traditional Western markets.
