The longest tunnels in the world are not the famous rail crossings most people picture: water-supply tunnels run far further underground. This chart ranks completed tunnels of all types by length in kilometres; tunnels still planned or under construction are excluded.
Analysis
The Delaware Aqueduct is the longest tunnel in operation at 137.0 kilometres, 1.14 times the 120.0 kilometres of the Päijänne Water Tunnel. 6 of these 12 are water-supply tunnels, which is the point of the chart: rail and road tunnels dominate public attention, but the longest bores ever dug carry drinking water. Together the 12 tunnels shown run 980 kilometres underground, and the shortest here still stretches 58.3 kilometres.
