Twenty-three World Cups have been played since 1930. Exactly one country has been at every single one of them: Brazil.

The most reliable qualifiers

Brazil's 23 appearances are a perfect record. Germany is next on 21, having missed only 1930, when it did not enter, and 1950, when it was not permitted to compete after the war. Argentina follows on 19, then Italy and Mexico level on 18.

After that the list settles into a familiar group of European and South American sides: Spain, England and France on 17 each, Belgium and Uruguay on 15.

Italy's absence is the striking one

Italy has won the World Cup four times, a total bettered only by Brazil. Yet its most recent appearance at the tournament was 2014. It failed to qualify for 2018, 2022 and 2026 — three consecutive tournaments missed by a nation that has lifted the trophy more often than Argentina, France or Spain.

Nothing in the record books quite prepares you for that. Italy's 18 appearances still place it joint fourth all-time, but every one of those was earned before the current drought began.

Eighty-four nations, and most of them rarely appear

In total, 84 different national teams have played at a World Cup finals. The distribution is heavily skewed: a handful of countries appear almost every time, while the majority have qualified only once or twice.

Below the top ten, appearance counts fall away quickly — Switzerland, Sweden and Serbia on 13, South Korea, the United States and the Netherlands on 12, then Russia on 11 and the Czech Republic on 10. Portugal and Scotland, both familiar names in European football, have nine each.

The expansion of the 2026 tournament to 48 teams changes this picture going forward. More places means more first-time qualifiers, and the gap between the regulars and everyone else should narrow over the next few tournaments.
