About This Dataset
Deepest Caves in the WorldKrubera-Voronja (2,224 m) and Veryovkina (2,209 m) are the world's only 2-km-plus caves, and both sit in the same Arabika Massif of Abkhazia/Georgia - which also holds Sarma (1,830 m) and Tovliani (1,760 m), giving one small region the four deepest systems on the planet. Beyond that cluster there is a steep 70-metre drop to Lamprechtsofen (1,727 m) in Austria, after which the list eases gradually through the French Alps (Gouffre Mirolda, Gouffre Jean-Bernard) and northern Spain. The concentration reflects thick, soluble limestone and high mountain relief, the two ingredients that let water carve such extraordinary vertical depth.
