About This Dataset
Top 10 Annual Nitrous Oxide Increases, Including Ties, 2001–2025
2020 has the largest increase at 1.32 ppb, followed by 2021 at 1.29 ppb. Ranking all 25 complete years from 2001–2025 gives eleven observations at or above the tenth-place cutoff: both 2013 and 2023 have 1.01 ppb. No tied year is dropped.
NOAA Global Monitoring Laboratory’s October 9, 2026 data release reports the net annual change in dry-air mole fraction, in ppb, from the beginning to the end of each year. This is concentration growth after additions and removals, not annual emissions, percentage growth, or the atmospheric concentration level. The series uses globally averaged marine surface measurements with the seasonal cycle removed. Last-year estimates can be revised; 2026 is not a full-year observation.
Published one-standard-deviation uncertainties (ppb): 2020: 1.32 ± 0.11; 2021: 1.29 ± 0.02; 2014: 1.24 ± 0.13; 2022: 1.23 ± 0.01; 2025: 1.23 ± 0.01; 2018: 1.17 ± 0.12; 2010: 1.08 ± 0.13; 2017: 1.02 ± 0.13; 2024: 1.02 ± 0.01; 2013: 1.01 ± 0.13; 2023: 1.01 ± 0.02. Small gaps may be within uncertainty; ranks compare point estimates.
Sources checked October 28, 2026. Equal values are ties; display order does not break a tie.

Analysis
2022 and 2025 are tied at 1.23 ppb, while 2017 and 2024 share 1.02 ppb. The lead of 2020 over 2021 is only 0.03 ppb; given the published uncertainties, the numerical order is not proof of a significant difference.
