Countries With the Most Hindus 2020
About This Dataset
Countries With the Most Hindus 2020
What this chart shows. The 25 countries with the most Hindus in 2020, in millions of people. India alone had 1,113.2 million, 94.5% of the world's 1,177.9 million Hindus. Nepal was second with 23.5 million, Bangladesh third with 13.1 million and Pakistan fourth with 5.0 million.
How the data is collected. Pew takes each country's total population from the 2024 revision of the United Nations' World Population Prospects and divides it among seven categories: Christians, Muslims, Hindus, Buddhists, Jews, other religions and the religiously unaffiliated. The religious shares come from censuses, surveys and population registers.
Background. The number of Hindus worldwide grew 12.0% between 2010 and 2020, close to the growth of the world population (12.3%), so their share stayed near 15%: 15.0% in 2010 and 14.9% in 2020. Outside South Asia, the largest Hindu populations were in Indonesia, 4.3 million, and the United States, 3.0 million. The US figure was up 69.8% on 2010, and Australia's more than doubled, to 0.8 million.
Limits. Pew's file shows any group smaller than 10,000 people as "<10,000", so only 55 countries have a counted Hindu population, and the chart shows the top 25. Below the top few countries the numbers are small, and rounding to the nearest 10,000 matters more there than for India.
