What this chart shows. The 25 states with the fastest growth in payroll jobs in 2025, comparing the average number of nonfarm jobs with 2024. Idaho led with growth of 1.53 per cent, followed by Utah at 1.27 per cent and South Carolina at 1.26 per cent.
How the data is collected. Job counts come from BLS's Current Employment Statistics survey of employers, which counts jobs on payrolls rather than people; annual averages are not seasonally adjusted and, unlike the unemployment series, include October 2025.
Background. Jobs grew in 36 of the 51 and fell in 15, with the steepest fall in the District of Columbia, 2.50 per cent. Texas added the most jobs in absolute terms, about 150 thousand, and nationally payroll jobs grew 0.48 per cent.
Limits. Payroll data count jobs where people work, not where they live, and a person with two jobs is counted twice. BLS revises state payroll figures every year when it benchmarks them to unemployment insurance tax records.
