Severe Weather Reports by Month 2025

What this chart shows. The number of severe weather reports in the 50 US states and the District of Columbia in each month of 2025, adding together severe hail reports, damaging wind reports and tornadoes from NOAA's Storm Prediction Center. June had the most with 6,795, followed by May with 6,616, April with 4,695 and July with 4,652. January had the fewest with 73. The year's total was 31,628.

How the data is collected. Each month's figure is the sum of three counts: hail reports of 1 inch or larger (7,982 in the year), thunderstorm wind reports (22,263) and tornadoes (1,383). Tornadoes are counted once each, while hail and wind are counted per report, so a single storm can contribute many reports.

Background. The three hazards peak at different times. Hail reports were highest in May, with 2,449, and wind reports in June, with 5,334, while tornadoes peaked in April with 313. May and June together held 13,411 reports, 42.4 per cent of the year.

Limits. Mixing report counts and tornado counts gives a measure of how busy the season was, not of how dangerous each month was. Wind reports make up most of the total, so the monthly pattern largely follows the wind season.
