Largest Hailstone by State 2025

What this chart shows. The largest hailstone reported in each US state in 2025, in inches of diameter, among the severe hail reports in NOAA's Storm Prediction Center database. Texas had the largest at 6.00 inches, reported on May 25. Kentucky, Oklahoma and South Dakota each had a hailstone of 4.50 inches, and several states, including Arkansas, Colorado, Indiana and Iowa, reached 4.00 inches.

How the data is collected. For each state the chart takes the single largest hail size in the Storm Prediction Center's 2025 hail file. Only states with at least one report of hail 1 inch or larger are included, 48 in all. Ten of the eleven states whose largest stone reached 4 inches or more recorded it between March 30 and June 28.

Background. Seven of the year's hail reports were 5 inches or larger, and all were in Texas, where the biggest, 6.00 inches, fell on May 25. The Storm Prediction Center classes hail of 2 inches or more as significant severe hail.

Limits. One report decides each state's value, so a single measurement error can move a state up or down. Sources can also disagree: Wikipedia's article on the June 2025 derecho mentions 4-inch hail near Jamestown Dam, North Dakota, on June 20, while the NOAA database records 3.00 inches there that day.
