Hail Reports by State 2025

What this chart shows. The number of reports of severe hail, 1 inch in diameter or larger, in each US state in 2025, from NOAA's Storm Prediction Center. Texas had by far the most with 1,302, followed by Oklahoma with 637, Kansas with 497, Missouri with 480 and Nebraska with 438. Severe hail was reported in 48 states; District of Columbia, Hawaii and Washington had none.

How the data is collected. Each row in the Storm Prediction Center's hail file is one report of hail at a place and time, with the size in inches, so a single storm that drops hail along a long path can produce many reports. The file for 2025 also holds 1,385 reports of hail smaller than 1 inch, which are left out here. That leaves 7,982 reports in the 50 states and the District of Columbia.

Background. The Storm Prediction Center counts a thunderstorm as severe when it produces hail at least 1 inch in diameter, wind gusts of 58 mph or more, or a tornado. It treats hail of 2 inches or more as significant severe weather; 1,058 of the 2025 reports reached that size, and 39 were 4 inches or larger.

Limits. These are reports, not storms: a hailstorm crossing a busy area is reported more often than the same storm over empty land. Large states also have more room for hail, so the counts favour Texas and the Plains states.
