Days at Hurricane Strength by Storm 2025Every storm that reached hurricane strength in 2025 in the Atlantic, eastern Pacific and central Pacific, ranked by how many days it spent as a hurricane. The basin is shown after each name.
How the data is collected
The count uses the HURDAT2 Atlantic and Northeast and North Central Pacific best-track files, both dated February 2026, from the National Hurricane Center. Each record at 0000, 0600, 1200 or 1800 UTC with hurricane (HU) status counts as six hours, and the hours are converted to days. Asynoptic records added for landfalls and intensity peaks are left out of the count.
Background
On the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale published by NHC, category 1, the lowest hurricane category, begins at 64 knots. NHC's report on Humberto notes that it did not directly impact land but passed close enough to Bermuda to prompt a Tropical Storm Watch there. The HURDAT2 guide assigns HU status only to tropical cyclones of hurricane intensity, so the hours a storm spends as an extratropical system are excluded even when its winds stay high.
Limits
The six-hour steps make each total accurate only to within a few hours. Days at hurricane strength do not distinguish a category 1 from a category 5, and they do not measure size or impact. The Atlantic and Pacific storms come from two separate best-track files, and each storm is listed under the basin in its identifier even if it crossed into another.
Erin spent the most time as a hurricane in 2025, 7.25 days, just ahead of the eastern Pacific's Kiko on 7. Melissa (5.75) and Humberto (5.25) complete the top four, so three of the four longest-lived hurricanes were Atlantic storms. The Atlantic's five hurricanes add up to 24.25 hurricane days, while the 11 Pacific hurricanes total 26.25, spread over more than twice as many storms. Erick, a category 4 storm, spent only 1.75 days as a hurricane, and Barbara and Gil were hurricanes for 18 hours each.
