Floor area ignores height, which is what makes a cathedral feel vast from the inside. This chart ranks the largest church buildings by gross interior volume in cubic metres, a measure that rewards tall naves and high domes as much as wide floors.
Analysis
St. Peter's Basilica encloses 1,600,000 cubic metres, 1.33 times the 1,200,000 of Cathedral Basilica of Our Lady Aparecida. Volume and floor area do not always agree: the largest church by interior area is St. Peter's Basilica, and a building with a smaller footprint can hold more air if its vaults are higher.
