Longest Metro Systems in the World 2026
Route length in kilometres for the longest metro systems in operation in September 2026. Length is measured along the route rather than by track, so a twin-track line counts once. Systems are grouped as their operators define them, which is why several Chinese cities appear as a single network covering many lines.
Analysis
Beijing runs the longest network at 909 km, ahead of Shanghai on 890 km. 11 of the 12 systems are Chinese, together accounting for 7,084 km of the 7,626 km on this chart. The shortest network listed, Xi'an, measures 423.9 km; the leader is 2.1 times longer. Moscow is the only system outside China.
