Global Electricity Generation by Year 2000-2025
About This Dataset
Global Electricity Generation by Year 2000-2025World electricity output more than doubled between 2000 and 2025, from 15,279 TWh to 31,734 TWh, a rise of 16,456 TWh. Growth was unusually steady: only two years in the whole series came in below the one before, 2009 at -159 TWh and 2020 at -120 TWh, and both dips were erased within a single year. The rebound years are also the largest here: 2021 added 1,531 TWh and 2024 added 1,271 TWh, the two biggest annual increases in the series, ahead of 2018 at 1,023 TWh. Every year since 2021 has added at least 600 TWh, so demand growth has accelerated rather than levelled off after the pandemic.
