Total electricity generated by each country in 2023, in terawatt-hours, across all fuels and technologies, as measured by Ember.
Analysis
China generated 9456 TWh in 2023 against 4254 TWh for the United States, a gap of 5203 TWh - larger than the entire output of any other country on earth. India is third at 1918 TWh. Comparing this with the 2024 edition shows how quickly the top of the table is moving: China added several hundred terawatt-hours in a single year while most of the countries below fifth place barely changed.
